Interested participants have until 28 February 2018 to submit an abstract for a paper presentation at an international workshop, organized in cooperation with the IAEA, aimed at exploring quality, leadership and management in the nuclear industry.

The nuclear industry is undergoing a period of significant change: Several of the 30 operating Member States are expanding their fleet or looking into using their nuclear power plants beyond their design lifetime. Some others aim to downsize or retire their national nuclear fleets. About 30 other Member States are considering, planning or starting nuclear power programmes. The main reasons behind these changes are both political and economic. In addition, the nuclear industry is also seeing radical changes in its workforce. Many experts with specialist knowledge, as in the design, safety or operations sectors, will soon be retiring, with a new generation gradually coming in to replace them.

The International Conference on Quality, Leadership and Management in the Nuclear Industry – 15th FORATOM-IAEA Management Systems Workshop, to be held in Ottawa, Canada from 16 to 19 July 2018, will focus on these latest trends.

The overall purpose of the Conference is to serve as an international forum for the exchange of information on management system and quality management standards. Attendees will be able to exchange experiences, practical examples and case studies, which deal with leadership and organizational culture and with the implementation of risk based/informed approaches. The Conference will also include relevant and interactive working group sessions giving participants more time to debate key topics of relevance to them, share experiences and to draw lessons from their peers.

“We are glad to have converted our workshop that we have been organizing with FORATOM into an international conference, which will enable us to more comprehensively address the needs of Member States from across the world,” said Pekka Pyy, a senior expert on organization and management systems at the IAEA Department of Nuclear Energy.

The Programme Committee is seeking abstracts that present case situations on management system applications and quality management. Abstracts (max. 500 words) should summarize the objectives of the work, main challenges, main findings and lessons learned. Presentations are being sought on a wide variety of topics with an emphasis on practical examples of good practices in the area of management system development, implementation and continuous improvement.
