On 6 December 2011, the European Nuclear Assembly (ENA 2011) took place at the Residence Palace, in Brussels. This annual conference organised by FORATOM was sponsored by Westinghouse, GE Hitachi and AREVA. It is one of the most important conferences on the international nuclear events calendar. It was attended by over 100 delegates from 16 countries, including senior officials from the European institutions, think-tanks, national politicians, consultants, representatives from international organisations, journalists, and industry leaders.
ENA 2011 was chaired by FORATOM's President, Ralf Güldner. FORATOM's Director General, Jean-Pol Poncelet, set the scene with a presentation on the challenges and opportunities facing the European nuclear industry. The programme then revolved around a series of keynote presentations on central themes, including nuclear energy's role in powering Europe's low-carbon economy, establishing a green field nuclear site, the contribution of nuclear to EU energy policy, learning the lessons of Fukushima and the environmental, financial and social sustainability of nuclear. There were also two roundtable discussion moderated by journalists that examined nuclear's contribution to Europe's low-carbon economy and focused on the question of whether nuclear is sustainable. Among the guest speakers were Anne Lauvergeon, the former CEO of AREVA; Peter Faross, Deputy Director General of DG ENER; Hergen Haye, Head of New Nuclear & Strategy, Department of Energy, UK Government; Juhani Hyvärinen, CNO of Fennovoima Oy, Finland and Malcolm Grimston, an Associate Fellow of the international think-tank, Chatham House.
